What a great weekend of music!
As if getting to see Cheryl Wheeler at the Iron Horse in Northampton MA
on Friday wasn't enough, spur of the moment Brenda and I cruised to
Godfreys in Bethlehem PA (hometown for me) to check out Peter Mulvey
Saturday night.

I think this was his first feature at the club, although he has opened
there before. It was a small but very dedicated audience, cirlced up in
front of the stage, while Peter sat and did his thing. Very cool to see
him in an environment like this. My past experiences with his shows
have been at either Falcon Ridge or sold out at Passim. This was
different... And he rose to it wonderfully.

We were half an hour late, but still caught the majority of what was a
really great show. Interspersing his own material with covers (Stephen
Foster and Hoagy Carmichal!) he kept things flowing and moving. He also
proved to be quite the cool story teller, with tales of travels and
thoughts and funny mind games he plays while driving. He also kept the
audience in stitches throughout the show by occasionally throwing in
snippets of famous songs that sound like parts of his songs.

Highlights? Lots. "If Love Is Not Enough," "On The Way Up," "Grace,"
"Question Mark," and my fave: his encore was an instrumental "Imagine."

I've always liked what Peter does, and Saturday night surpased anything
I'd seen before. His time on the road lately has sharpened and refined
what he does hugely. He is truly a great guitar player, playful and
imaginative, and in a live setting you can also really connect with his
words and what it is he's striking for in a line or a phrase.

My favorite album of his, "Rapture," just can't be missed. It's on
Eastern Front, along with his new one "Deep Blue," also a gem.
