<< He has a Byrds- like country rock album due in a couple of months (on Sugar
Hill) that includes a 12-string guitar driven rendition of The Searchers'
Byrds-like tune, "Everytime You Walk Into The Room". Definitely worth
seeking..... >>
Thanks for the plug, Craig! Here's a bit more on Chris Hillman's "Like A
Hurricane."
Sugar Hill releases the album 6/16 in North America...but if you're in Europe,
you can pick it up 5/19 (to coincide with Hillman's May Euro tour). "Like A
Hurricane," according to Chris (and to which I can also attest), travels his
musical history...there are indeed Byrds-like moments and Desert Rose Band
moments...moreso perhaps than Hillmen bluegrass or Flying Burrito
Brothers...but there is a terrific rock cut--"Livin' On The Edge" (with power
chords, minor chords, and all the great elements of power pop/rock)...followed
by a beautiful folk number with gorgeous acoustic guitar--"Forgiveness."
Guests include Hal Blaine, David Crosby (for whom Chris wrote "I'm Still
Alive" when, as he puts it, he thought he had 2 days to live. He was inspired
by Dylan Thomas, "don't go softly into the night'--fight"), Jerry Douglas,
David Lindley, Jay Dee Maness, Lee Sklar, and Jennifer Warnes (on "Carry Me
Home").
Less obviously thematic than "Bakersfield Bound," "Like A Hurricane" sublimely
traces this Rock'n'Roll Hall of Famer's career and distills it into 40 minutes
of perfect country/folk/pop/rock. [What gets me is how Chris still sounds as
young and fresh as he did 33 (?) years ago when he first started getting
airplay in my ears...is that what clean living does for you?]
Thanks,
Rebekah.
