Sampler questions

Greg's request for a sampler suggestion raises a couple of questions:

Do many of the people on this list actually go out and buy a CD by a new
artist, just from hearing one or two songs on a sampler CD? Would it be
enough to intrigue someone to attend a concert of someone they haven't heard
of except for the sampler cut?
I guess the question is, is one or two good songs enough to do that?

Maybe I'm the only skeptic on this list??? I hear so many artists' names,
and I only have so much time to listen ... I really need to hear 30-45
minutes before I know I'm in the presence of a songwriter who really moves
me.

I've often thought that maybe if I knew a little more about the artist ...
there's not much room on samplers for bio or background info.

What if there were a spoken introduction to some of the songs on a sampler,
so that you knew more about the performer or the song? Would this be an
effective way to introduce a new songwriter to a new audience? Or would it
make the CD too hard to listen to?

Or maybe something comparable is the live recording, where the CD includes a
spoken introduction to the song ... you don't hear these often, but they do
give you some memorable background on the song, or tell you more about the
artist. What do people think about this? If there is spoken word added to
the mix, would that make a sampler more effective, or less enjoyable to
listen to?
