Having filed chronologically 1,350 files from 1946-1996 over a two-year
period, Rod began writing his book "Music From The Heart" before the end of
1996. Writing pretty much seven days a week (and many nights) for fourteen
months, he finished the book in February of 1998. Working with EAKIN PRESS
in Austin and his own editor Hugh C. Sparks, Rod completed proofing the book
at the Folk Alliance meetings in Memphis in February.

The book is now completed, over 400 pages and 500 photos and illustrations.
The last 25 years of the book encompass the first 25 years of the Kerrville
Music Festivals and includes the 25th Kerrville Folk Festival.

With an impressive introduction by Peter Yarrow, the book tells the 50 year
life story of Kerrville's festival producer with literally hundreds of
stories about more than 500 events and nearly 1,000 personalities, many of
whom are known by Kerrville fans, while many of them are leading political
figures, famous stars, grand prix drivers, and other fascinating people. One
extended section of the book is an almost daily chronicle of the emerging
Austin music scene during the late 1960's.

As song writer Fred Koller told the author, "there is no other book like
it". This 50 year adventure, which includes singing in a big band in the
1940's, early radio broadcasts with Cab Calloway, parties and productions
with artists ranging from Carmen Miranda to George Shearing, years in the
Marines including the Korean war, winning Columbia University's first FM
Broadcasting Music Excellence Award and starting Texas' first stereo
broadcasts, producing the world premiere of the 1966 "Batman" movie,
competing with LBJ building and operating Austin's second television
station, literally hundreds of special events encompassing virtually every
type of music, and the phone call from the Governor's office which lead to
the founding of the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1972. The book winds up in a
surprising completion of the first 25 years of Kerrville. As the author
said, he couldn't wait to see "how the book ended":
