I had the opportunity last night to soak up (literally- considering the
rainfall) a truly fun night of music from Camp Hoboken folk- Christain
Bauman, Linda Sharar, and Gregg Cagno along with their friend from the
north, Rachel Bissex at the 1st Madison Ave Deli series in Keene.
Faux-campfire in tow -- and plugged in, it was great hearing many new
-not-yet-recorded songs, as well as a couple from Linda's latest promo --
soon to be a full release. Can't wait for that one. This series was
originally billed to be truly "unplugged", i.e. no PA system, but the last
few shows there have found their ways onto a decent sound system. That is
nice with Camp Hoboken, considering Cagno's use of effects on his guitar
sound, which he does so well. We were treated to a grand version of Gregg's
true story "Hollywood Comes To Hoboken" about the time Ron Howard filmed a
movie in his neighborhood at Sixth & Cliinton, and had his car towed. Truly
one of the funniest songs of last year to be released. Christian Bauman
gave us many new songs, as well as a great version of "Running" which is
from his latest as well. Linda came through with the whole gang hamming it
up on "Bob Luciano's House", which is bound to be one of my favorites of
'98, and is already getting some of the airplay it deserves around the
airwaves of folk. Speaking of songs getting a ton of airplay, Rachel Bissex
gave us an excellent version of her song "Royal Blues" from her latest. The
most embarrasing moment of the evening (at least for me) was when Gregg
dragged me out of the crowd to add some terrible mandolin to "Mandolin
Moon". Yikes! A nice intimate venue, the campfire didn't even need to be
amplified. You could hear the embers crackling all night long. One laugh
after another for sure as Gregg Cagno asked a family in the audience the
name of their baby. He proceeded to tell the story about how he and Max
(the baby of course) used to tour together in the 70s with Max on
Sousaphone. His sincerity through the ordeal was the icing that kept us all
rolling off our seats. Dave Pyles was on hand turning the knobs, as well as
WKNH's Connie Bowblis who had the gang on the radio just prior, for yet
another set of songs of which only a couple were repeated later in the
evening. They are all off to the Burlington Coffeehouse tonight, and then
back down to Massachusetts I believe. Don't miss 'em if you can help it!
Oh- and if you see Bauman -- give him a swift kick in the butt for me,
alright?
