"Corday's music is at once personal and political, powerful and fragile,
fierce and tender÷ She treats the guitar like a drum, other times like a koto,
even a mbira." -Bob Redmond, KBCS
"... a lot of thought and energy, not to mention talent." -Option
Recorded live at the Seattle Mercer Arena and at theaters and clubs across the
Northwest, Painted Door is a collection of American and Latin songs,
rhythms, and a capella spells. Erin Corday's magical performances have earned
her top billing with
acts like Windham Hill's Nightnoise and the Flying Karamazovs. She has opened
for artists ranging from Brazilian superstar Milton
Nascimento to David Grisman and Richard Thompson.
The new album features the beautiful Chilean folksong "Mi Caballo" and an
original song in Portuguese, "El Tigre". Also includes Corday's amazing vocal
percussion on "Didjago" (skipping stones), her trademark hypnotic, flowing
guitar style on "Who Says;" "Land of Sweetness" celebrates the transforming
energy of erotic communion.
Playing nylon-string and acoustic guitars and the 8-string jarana from
Mexico, Erin Corday is joined by percussionist and co-producer
Joel Litwin on vocal harmonies, briefcase, floor tom, frame
Drum and timely wit. Special guest Pliny Keep contributes the mouth trumpet
and vocal
percussion on "Long Hair." No worn trails here - "Painted Door" is as
different from Erin's previous CDs as they are from one another.
>From "Wicked Road":
broken down again
but there's no hurry
choirboys sing--
the frogs and the crickets
fireflies tickle the dark sky
hey! hey!
