Angel Music

Last night I went to see City of Angels, a film directed by
Brad Silberling, with Nicholas Cage, Meg Ryan, and other well-
known actors. It was a re-make of the 1987 classic Wings of
Desire (Der Himmel ½ber Berlin) which was directed by Wim
Wenders, was mostly in black & white, and starred Bruno Ganz,
Solveig Dommartin, and Peter Falk among others. Both movies
had different feelings and sensibilities about them, more
subtleties and abstractions in the German version, and script
changes in the American re-make, leading to a Hollywood-style
ending.

Also both films have outstanding soundtracks. City of Angels
has cuts by Paula Cole (Feelin' Love), Sarah McLachlan (Angel),
Alanis Morrisette (Uninvited) and others. Wings of Desire's CD
has mostly classical tracks, Laurie Anderson (Angel Fragments),
Nick Cave and the Bad Seed, and others. A sequel movie by Wim
Wenders, Faraway, So Close! (In weiter Ferne, so nah!) was made
in 1991, and featured music tracks by Jane Siberry (Slow Tango),
Lou Reed, Nick Cave, U2, and others.

All this got me to thinking about which songs weren't on these
soundtracks, but would have fit in so well. Here's my short list:

Shawn Colvin - Cry Like an Angel
Melissa Etheridge - Talking to my Angel
Joy Eden Harrison - Angel Town
Jewel - Angel Standing By
Kings Road - Where Angels Walk
Jane Siberry - Calling All Angels
Heather Nova - Maybe An Angel

Any suggestions for more angel music?

Cheers,

Joel

[Alan sez: I've been toying with the idea of an Angels tape with Dee Carstensen's cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Angel", Susan Piper's "Bagels With Angels", Bob Bennett's "Angels Around Your Bed", Tom Kimmel's "Lifted up by Angels", Deniece Williams "Touch Me Again", Bette Midlers classic (though overplayed) version of "The Wind Beneath My Wings", and some other stuff. Isn't there a good Eliza Gilkyson angel song? How about Jeff Healey's cut of John Hiatt's "Angel Eyes"? I'll have to look around and see if I have my notes anywhere. I thought that the angel theme might be a *little* heavyhanded, but there's lots of strong material to choose from.)
