Since we've been talking about this wonderful song, and the many wonderful
versions, I think one of the most beautiful versions I ever heard is one
that has never been released. In 1982, I was in Chicago for a visit, and I
had the opportunity to hear Michael Smith live at The Earl of Old Town.
Before the show, I asked him if he would mind if I recorded the show on my
cheap tape recorder. He said it would be fine. I didn't get all the songs
on tape, but one I did get was "The Water is Wide" as only Michael can do
it, with his own special feeling and phrasings, a gem. I must have listened
to that tape hundreds of times in the 16 years since, and it still is playable!
An interesting little side tidbit--at the beginning of the tape, I also
recorded one song by the opening act, a songwriter by the name of Dan Bern!

[Alan sez: Isn't that always the way? I've heard Susan Werner do some
killer covers, especially of standards like "Where Do You Start" and
"Everytime We Say Goodbye", but she never seems to play them twice...]
