It's been enlightening to learn of all the different "favorite" versions
folks have of this most beautiful of traditional ballads. I'm surprised,
though, that no one has yet mentioned the lovely treatment by Leon Bibb
(along with guitarist John Stauber) from the early '60's. It appears on a
Vanguard recording (VRS-9073) called "Leon Bibb Sings Love Songs". Bibb's
voice is glorious, and the arrangement offers, instead of the usual free
rhythm, a guitar line by Stauber that is highly rhythmic with hints of a
Bach invention. This is the performance I compare all others to.
